Every successful memoir creates a fully realized world. That world encompasses the internal world of your I-character: how did it feel to grow up with forbidden desires or to lose your entire family in a tsunami? And there is also the world around your I-character, the setting, which encompasses the the place where the story takes place, but also where that story takes place in history. Through close reading of published works, and in-class exercises, we will explore how setting can also develop the tone of a piece, reveal character, lifestyle, and emotional point of view.
